In my Strengths-Based Emotional Intelligence workshop, I teach the mindful practice of Pausing when one is triggered. The practice elements are: Stop, Breathe, Notice, Reflect, and Respond (Maybe). Given our neurology, easier said than done, yet so powerful when exercised. Part 1 -Stopping to be curious about one's own feelings. Questioning what story we are telling ourselves is revealing and can be healing (choosing to believe my old story or deciding that maybe that story has run its course). Part 2 - Being curious about what is going on for the other person, gently inquiring why they did or said what they did, is as powerful and insightful. Join me in pausing, breathing deeply and focusing on curiosity the next time you feel triggered.
